Savvy choices.
First visit? Stay in Downtown Kawaramachi, Sanjo & Karasuma.
It is the most forgiving first base: strong rail and subway connections, abundant restaurants and hotels, and easy walks to the Kamo River, Gion and central Kyoto. Kyoto’s major temples are dispersed in every direction, so a central transport grid beats sleeping beside any single attraction.
Avoid sleeping near The immediate south-side Hachijo hotel strip around Kyoto Station, Southern Higashiyama immediately around Kiyomizu-dera’s tourist lanes, Far-northwest Kinkaku-ji temple area, Fushimi Sake District. It is convenient rather than disastrous, but travelers who chose it for “Kyoto atmosphere” often find broad roads, large hotels and a long ride or walk to evening neighborhoods. Stay here deliberately for rail logistics.
