Visas & entry
Citizens of the US, Canada, UK, EU countries, Australia and many Latin American countries generally enter visa-free for tourism stays of up to 90 days; many other nationalities need a visa or may qualify for an electronic travel authorization. Argentine rules and passport-validity requirements can change, so verify with the Argentine consulate or immigration authority before booking.
Getting in
- Ministro Pistarini International Airport, Ezeiza: The main intercontinental gateway, about 30 km southwest of central Buenos Aires. Use an official taxi/remis desk, prebooked transfer, airport bus or rideshare; allow roughly 45–90 minutes depending on traffic.
- Aeroparque Jorge Newbery: The city airport on the riverfront, used heavily for domestic flights and many regional South American services. It is far more convenient for Palermo, Recoleta and the center—usually 20–40 minutes by car, traffic permitting.
- Retiro bus terminal: The realistic overland hub for long-distance buses from elsewhere in Argentina and neighboring countries. It is useful, but the immediate area is hectic; use a taxi or rideshare for onward travel rather than lingering with luggage.
- Puerto Madero ferry terminal: The practical arrival point for Buquebus/Colonia Express services from Uruguay, especially Colonia del Sacramento and Montevideo connections. It lands centrally, near the historic core and San Telmo.
Getting around
Use one hotel base; CABA is compact on a map but slow across town, with an 8–12 km north–south crossing often taking 35–60 minutes in traffic. Walk within a barrio cluster, use the Subte for straightforward radial trips, and take buses when they offer the direct route—but buses require map confidence and patience. Taxis and rideshare are the sensible night option and the right choice for La Boca; do not expect the Subte to solve every cross-city connection.
Money
The currency is the Argentine peso (ARS), but inflation and exchange rates move fast, so plan in US dollars and check current prices immediately before travel. Cards work widely in hotels, better restaurants and shops, but carry some pesos for small purchases, transit and casual cafés; foreign-card exchange treatment and cash rates can differ. A 10% tip is customary in restaurants when service is not included, preferably in cash.
Daily budget · ARS locally; plan in USD because inflation and exchange rates make fixed peso budgets unreliable.

- Mid-range
- US$150–260
- High-end
- US$400–800+
- Bands are per person per day, excluding international flights. Value assumes a hostel bed or a simple private room shared by two, cheap lunches, one modest sit-down meal, public transport and occasional rideshare.
- Mid-range covers a good 3–4-star hotel or well-located apartment shared by two, restaurant dinners with wine, rideshares when useful, museum entries, and a tour or performance every few days.
- High-end means top boutique or five-star hotels, tasting menus and premium parrillas, serious wine, private guides/drivers, and prime theater or football access.
- Accommodation, wine and cocktails, fine dining, big-match or concert tickets, and relying on private cars move the budget far more than local transit.
- Use USD as the planning benchmark, then check ARS prices and payment/exchange options immediately before travel. Public transit is cheap relative to taxis but fares change frequently.
Eating well
- Book sought-after parrillas, tasting-menu restaurants and headline contemporary dining rooms, especially Thursday through Saturday; ordinary pizzerías, cafés and bodegones usually reward walking in.
- Dinner starts late. A 9:30–10:30 pm reservation is normal, and pizza or café culture can run later still.
- Do not judge the city by Puerto Madero restaurants: go there for the waterfront setting, not for its most distinctive food.
- At a traditional pizzería, eat at the counter at least once and order fainá with the pizza.
- Empanadas are useful snacks, but do not make them the centerpiece of a Buenos Aires food itinerary; the city’s stronger signatures are pizza, pasta, cafés, bodegones and beef.
- Argentina’s prices move quickly. Check current menus and wine-list prices near your travel dates rather than relying on old peso figures.
Book before you land
Teatro Colón performances and the most convenient guided-tour slots · Major Boca Juniors and River Plate home matches, bought through official club channels or a reputable authorized seller · Headline tango performances, opera, concerts and major festival events—especially during Tango BA Festival y Mundial · High-demand tasting-menu restaurants and top parrillas on Thursday–Saturday nights
- Stay in one base—Palermo, Recoleta, San Telmo or the Retiro end of Barrio Norte—and organize days by adjacent barrios rather than zigzagging across the city.
- Load a SUBE transit card for Subte and buses; fares and registration rules change, and public transport is cheap but not designed as a tourist shuttle.
- Buenos Aires eats late. Dinner before 9 pm can mean a quiet room; 9:30–10:30 pm is normal, and theater or milonga nights run much later.
- Treat La Boca as a purposeful daylight visit: stick to main streets and recommended routes, then leave by licensed taxi or rideshare rather than walking back toward the center after dark.
- Puerto Madero and the Reserva Ecológica are for waterfront walks, running, birds and skyline views—not swimming.
- San Telmo’s cobbles are hard on wheeled luggage and limited mobility; Sunday around Plaza Dorrego is enjoyable but crowded, commercial and priced accordingly.

Season by season
December–February
Summer brings hot, humid afternoons—often 28–33°C—plus thunderstorms, long daylight and very late evenings; January is quieter but some independent places reduce hours.

All-day walking is draining, and Christmas, New Year and Carnival can lift hotel demand; January closures can frustrate food- and gallery-focused visits.
March–May
Autumn shifts from warm March weather to generally mild April and May days, with comfortable temperatures for walking and the cultural calendar in full swing.

April brings major book-fair and independent-film-festival demand, especially around Palermo and central accommodation.
June–August
Winter is cool rather than severe, typically around 8–16°C, but damp wind, gray skies, rain and shorter daylight make outdoor plans less reliable.

July school holidays raise family demand, while cold rain and early darkness blunt the appeal of a walking-heavy first visit.
September–November
Spring is mild to warm and lively, with parks, terraces and outdoor neighborhoods at their best; jacarandas peak most dramatically in late October and November.

Events worth planning around
Buenos Aires International Book Fair · Usually late April to early May, for roughly three weeks. · La Rural, Palermo
It draws large crowds and can increase demand for Palermo and central hotels; book accommodation earlier if your dates overlap.
BAFICI — Buenos Aires International Festival of Independent Cinema · Usually April; dates vary annually. · Screening venues across central Buenos Aires and Palermo
Film screenings add cultural appeal but also create extra demand for central and Palermo accommodation; reserve sought-after screenings once the program is released.
Tango BA Festival y Mundial · Usually late August into early September. · Multiple venues across Buenos Aires
The city fills with concerts, milongas, classes and championship events; tango-focused visitors should book lodging and headline tickets early.
What to eat
Eat beyond the steakhouse: Buenos Aires is an immigrant-built eating city of thick cheese-heavy pizza, pasta, bodegones, cafés, pastries and late-night gelato as much as parrilla. Use parrillas for beef, but make at least one standing pizza stop, one long café break and one neighborhood dinner outside the obvious tourist strip.
Parrilla/asado: bife de chorizo, ojo de bife, vacío, entraña, asado de tira and provoleta; use chimichurri sparingly rather than covering the meat.Pizza porteña: thick, oily, cheese-forward slices—especially muzzarella and fugazzeta—with fainá chickpea flatbread placed over the slice.Milanesa, especially milanesa napolitana with tomato, ham and cheese: classic oversized bodegón fare.Pasta and ñoquis: everyday Italian-Argentine cooking, not just a tourist option; the 29th-of-the-month gnocchi tradition is still observed.Medialunas and facturas with a cortado or lágrima: take the café ritual seriously, whether at breakfast or as a late-afternoon pause.Argentine helado: try dulce de leche once, then compare pistachio, sambayón and fruit flavors.Vermouth, aperitivo and Argentine wine alongside late dinners.
Avenida Corrientes and San Nicolás: Classic pizzerías, including the stand-at-the-counter format · Late pizza, theater-night food and coffee
San Telmo: Mercado de San Telmo grazing · Cafés, old-school dining and market-driven casual eating
Palermo: The broadest choice of contemporary restaurants, bars and late-night dining · Good all-purpose base for food-focused travelers
Chacarita and Villa Crespo: Contemporary dining, independent restaurants and bakeries · Traditional pizzerías and low-key bar-hopping beyond Palermo
Abasto, Almagro and Balvanera: Bodegones, traditional pizzerías and neighborhood milongas · Jewish and immigrant food traditions
Belgrano and Barrio Chino: Chinese and broader East Asian food · A useful change from the parrilla-and-pizza circuit
