Burgas
Base · 1–2 days
The region's useful urban base: airport and transport hub, a good Sea Garden, solid restaurants, and easy access to the bay, lakes and St Anastasia Island. Give it one or two nights, not the bulk of a beach holiday.
Pomorie
Base · 1–2 days
A calmer peninsula town where salt pans, therapeutic mud, a small old quarter and fish restaurants matter more than resort spectacle. It is a practical, affordable base between Burgas and Nessebar.
Nessebar
Base · 1–2 days
Old Nessebar is the coast's essential historic stop: a compact fortified peninsula of churches, ruins and narrow lanes. Stay overnight or visit early and late; midday summer crowds and souvenir stalls flatten the experience.
Sozopol
Base · 1–3 days
The best all-round coastal base, with an atmospheric old town, stronger food scene than Nessebar and easy access to coves and larger beaches at Kavatsi and Gradina. It is busy and pricey in high summer, but still earns a longer stay.
Ropotamo and Primorsko–Kiten
Base · 1–2 days
Come here to break up beach time with the Ropotamo River, wetlands and dunes, plus Beglik Tash's Thracian rock sanctuary. Primorsko and Kiten are functional beach bases rather than destinations to linger in for their townscape.
Tsarevo, Varvara and Ahtopol
Short stop · 1 day
This south-coast strip is less polished and more lived-in than the big resort belt, with small beaches, fishing-port atmosphere and reasonably priced guesthouses. Tsarevo supplies services; Varvara and Ahtopol provide the character.
Sinemorets, Silistar and Rezovo
Base · 2–3 days
The region's strongest coastal scenery: Veleka River beach at Sinemorets, forest-backed Silistar and the dead-end border village of Rezovo. Base here for quieter swimming and walks, preferably with a car.
Strandzha
Short stop · 1 day
The forested inland counterweight to the coast, best approached through Malko Tarnovo and the architectural village of Brashlyan. Stay a night for marked walks, village food and a genuine change of terrain; do not treat it as a rushed bus day trip.
Classic coast first visit
7-8 daysBurgas (2 days) → Pomorie (1 day) → Nessebar (2 days) → Sozopol (2-3 days)
The sensible car-free introduction: use Burgas for arrival and bay outings, Pomorie for salt pans and a quieter reset, then give Old Nessebar and Sozopol their own time rather than treating both as rushed day trips. Base in Sozopol for a Ropotamo excursion if you have the extra day.

8-9 daysBurgas (1-2 days) → Sozopol (2 days) → Tsarevo, Varvara and Ahtopol (1 day) → Sinemorets, Silistar and Rezovo (3 days) → Strandzha (1 day)
For travelers with a rental car who want the coast to become progressively less built-up. Sozopol supplies culture and food; the Tsarevo strip breaks the drive; Sinemorets is the proper beach-and-walks base; Strandzha earns an overnight instead of being reduced to a long detour.

The full regional trip for drivers: it gives the two historic towns room to breathe, adds Ropotamo and Beglik Tash without forcing a backtrack, then slows down for the far south and forest interior. Cut the Primorsko or Tsarevo overnight first if you need to shorten it.
Plan this routeFour-night long weekend
4-5 daysBurgas (1-2 days) → Pomorie (1 day) → Nessebar (1 day) → Sozopol (1 day)
A deliberately restrained car-free route. Stay in Burgas if transport convenience matters, or shift the Burgas night to Sozopol if atmosphere matters more. This covers the essential towns; do not try to bolt on Sinemorets or Strandzha.
