Xining
Base · 2–3 days
The necessary gateway for acclimatizing, arranging a driver and eating Qinghai’s best Hui and Tibetan-influenced food. Use it for Kumbum (Ta’er) Monastery, 25–30 km southwest, rather than treating the city itself as a long stay.
Qinghai Lake
Base · 1–2 days
Base the lake experience around Erlangjian on the southeast shore for formal access and Heimahe on the southwest shore for an overnight before Chaka. Go for the immense scale, pastureland and shifting light—not for a neatly packaged single attraction.
Chaka Salt Lake
Base · 1–3 days
A white salt-crust landscape west of the lake, with shallow water that can produce the classic mirror effect in the right light. It is overtly managed and crowded, but still earns its place on a first loop if you book entry and allow time for weather.
Menyuan and the Qilian Mountains
Base · 3 days
Northern Qinghai’s strongest mountain-and-meadow country: broad valleys, high grasslands, snow peaks and summer rapeseed fields. Stay in Qilian town rather than attempting this as a rushed detour from Xining.
Tongren (Rebkong)
Base · 3 days
The best cultural counterweight to the lake loop, with thangka-painting traditions, village monasteries and a more lived-in Tibetan setting than a quick monastery visit near Xining. Give it dedicated time instead of forcing it into a northern road circuit.
Guide and Kanbula
Short stop · 1 day
A markedly different Qinghai of Yellow River valleys, red sandstone cliffs and reservoir scenery south of Xining. Kanbula needs a full day by car; internal transfers make it a poor half-day add-on.
Qaidam Basin
Base · 4–5 days
Western Qinghai’s real deep cut: salt deserts, multicolored lakes, Yardang formations and long, empty highways, with Delingha and Dachaidan serving as functional overnight stops. This needs its own vehicle-based extension, not an optimistic day trip from Chaka.
Golmud and the Kunlun Corridor
Base · 4 days
Golmud is the western rail and road outpost for the Qinghai–Tibet corridor, useful for travelers drawn to serious plateau scale and the approach to Kunlun and Hoh Xil. Treat Hoh Xil as a tightly controlled, high-altitude corridor experience, not an independent wildlife excursion.
Yushu (Jyekundo) and Sanjiangyuan
A far-southern Tibetan plateau base for travelers interested in the river-headwaters country and a culturally distinct side of Qinghai. It works best as a separate trip, usually reached by flight, rather than an overland extension of Qinghai Lake.
Compact first visit: lake and salt flats
5 daysXining (2 days) → Qinghai Lake (1 day) → Chaka Salt Lake (2 days)
The only short Qinghai route worth doing. Acclimatize and see Kumbum from Xining, overnight around Heimahe on Qinghai Lake, then give Chaka enough time for the attraction and the long drive back to Xining. Do not bolt on Qilian or Tongren.
Plan this routeCulture and Yellow River country with the classic lake loop
8 daysXining (2 days) → Guide and Kanbula (1 day) → Qinghai Lake (1 day) → Chaka Salt Lake (1 day) → Tongren (Rebkong) (3 days)
For travelers who want more than the standard lake-and-salt-flat circuit. Guide and Kanbula add Yellow River and red-rock scenery; Tongren gets proper time for monasteries and Rebkong art rather than becoming a rushed detour. Build in the necessary Xining transfers between these zones.
Plan this routeNorthern grasslands, Qilian mountains and lake loop
10 daysXining (2 days) → Menyuan and the Qilian Mountains (3 days) → Qinghai Lake (2 days) → Chaka Salt Lake (3 days)
The strongest all-round first road trip for summer: Menyuan’s broad valleys and rapeseed country, a proper stay in Qilian, then the north and south shores of Qinghai Lake before Chaka. The generous Chaka allocation absorbs the long final drive back to Xining; this is vehicle-dependent and should not be attempted as a bus itinerary.
Plan this routeWestern Qinghai: Qaidam salt desert and Kunlun corridor
12-14 daysXining (2-3 days) → Qinghai Lake (1 day) → Chaka Salt Lake (1 day) → Qaidam Basin (4-5 days) → Golmud and the Kunlun Corridor (4 days)
For a second visit or a committed photography-and-road-trip group. After the essential lake and Chaka section, slow down in the Qaidam Basin around Delingha and Dachaidan, then use Golmud for a permitted Kunlun or Hoh Xil-corridor experience and transport buffers. Confirm foreign-passport access, road conditions and operator permissions before committing.
