Central Reykjavík
Base · 1–3 days
The essential base and first stop: Hallgrímskirkja, Laugavegur, Tjörnin, Harpa, independent shops, museums and the region’s strongest restaurant and nightlife concentration. Stay here rather than moving hotels around the metro area.
Old Harbour and Grandi
Short stop · 0.5–1 days
Reykjavík’s working-harbour past is clearest here, alongside whale and puffin boats, maritime museums, Þúfa and good casual food. It is more spread out and weather-exposed than the centre, so pair it with a harbour excursion or museum rather than treating it as a long all-weather stroll.
Vesturbær, Seltjarnarnes and Grótta
Short stop · 0.5–1 days
The best easy coast walk near central Reykjavík: local pool culture, sea paths, birdlife and broad views toward the mountains, ending at Grótta lighthouse. Go for the walk and changing light; skip it in hard wind unless you enjoy being thoroughly battered.
Viðey Island
Short stop · 0.5 days
A short ferry ride gives you a half-day of quiet trails, birds, ruins and outdoor art without committing to a road trip. It works best in settled weather and ferry season; bring your own food and layers because there is little shelter or service.
Kópavogur
Short stop · 0.5–1 days
Come primarily for Sky Lagoon, the region’s most polished sea-edge geothermal bathing splurge. Combine it with Gerðarsafn or nearby design museums if you want more than a bathing appointment.
Garðabær and Álftanes
Short stop · 0.5–1 days
A low-key coastal detour for the Museum of Design and Applied Art, Hofsstaðir archaeology, Garðahverfi and Álftanes shoreline birdlife. It is residential and quiet, so it earns its place mainly for travelers with a car or a specific interest in design, history or pools.
Hafnarfjörður
Short stop · 0.5–1 days
The capital area’s most distinct second town, with an old harbour, lava terrain, Hellisgerði park, Hafnarborg art centre and a more everyday rhythm than downtown Reykjavík. Visit for harbour life and geology, not the theatrical Viking branding.
Laugardalur, Elliðaárdalur and Öskjuhlíð
Short stop · 0.5–1 days
Reykjavík’s green interior combines the city’s biggest pool complex, botanical garden, river paths and Öskjuhlíð woodland. Perlan is a useful bad-weather stop, especially early in a trip, though it is a polished interpretation of Icelandic nature rather than the real thing.
Mosfellsbær, Mount Esja and Kjalarnes
Short stop · 1 day
This is the capital’s proper outdoor edge, anchored by the Mount Esja hike and quieter Kjalarnes coast. Esja is worthwhile but not casual: aim for Steinn if conditions and fitness suit, and treat wind, ice and cloud as reasons to turn back.
Kjós and the Hvalfjörður edge
Base · 1–2 days
The rural fjord fringe provides the strongest within-region contrast to Reykjavík: mountains, water, open skies and Hvammsvík’s high-end bathing-and-stay experience. Make it a slow car day or a deliberate retreat night, not a rushed checklist excursion.
Essential city-and-lagoon break
2-3 daysCentral Reykjavík (1 day) → Old Harbour and Grandi (0.5 day) → Kópavogur (0.5-1 day)
For a short first visit with no car. Give the centre a proper day, use the harbour for a boat trip or museum rather than aimless wandering, then finish with Sky Lagoon in Kópavogur. Stay in Central Reykjavík throughout; moving hotels would be ridiculous.

4-5 daysCentral Reykjavík (1.5 days) → Old Harbour and Grandi (0.5-1 day) → Kópavogur (0.5 day) → Hafnarfjörður (0.5-1 day) → Vesturbær, Seltjarnarnes and Grótta (0.5 day)
The sensible all-round Capital Region trip: city culture, one harbour outing, one premium geothermal soak, then the two best contrasts to downtown—lava-edged Hafnarfjörður and the exposed west-coast walk to Grótta. It works by foot, bus and taxi, with Central Reykjavík as the only base.

6-7 daysCentral Reykjavík (2 days) → Laugardalur, Elliðaárdalur and Öskjuhlíð (0.5-1 day) → Viðey Island (0.5 day) → Kópavogur (0.5 day) → Hafnarfjörður (0.5-1 day) → Mosfellsbær, Mount Esja and Kjalarnes (1 day) → Garðabær and Álftanes (0.5 day)
For travelers who want Reykjavík’s food, museums and pools without pretending the region is only urban. Keep Viðey as a fair-weather half-day and treat Esja as the week’s weather-dependent anchor; do not force the hike in wind, ice or low cloud. A car helps for Esja and Álftanes but is not essential for the rest.
Plan this routeSlow second-visit retreat
8-9 daysCentral Reykjavík (2-3 days) → Vesturbær, Seltjarnarnes and Grótta (0.5-1 day) → Laugardalur, Elliðaárdalur and Öskjuhlíð (0.5-1 day) → Viðey Island (0.5 day) → Hafnarfjörður (1 day) → Garðabær and Álftanes (0.5-1 day) → Mosfellsbær, Mount Esja and Kjalarnes (1 day) → Kjós and the Hvalfjörður edge (1-2 days)
For repeat visitors happy to spend time on pools, restaurants, walks and changing weather rather than ticking off Icelandic headline sights. Use Central Reykjavík as the main base, rent a car for the northern and southern coastal edges, and only overnight in Kjós if Hvammsvík or another fjord retreat is genuinely the point of the trip.
