Bukittinggi and the Agam Highlands
Base · 2–4 days
The best mainland base: cool enough to walk, strong on markets and Minang food, and close to Sianok Canyon and the region's most useful day trips. Stay here rather than trying to sleep in a different town every night.
Padang
Base · 1–2 days
Use the capital for serious Minang eating, a look around Batang Arau, flights and Mentawai ferries. It is hot, spread out and traffic-heavy, so one or two nights is usually enough.
Lake Maninjau and Sungai Batang
A volcanic lake escape reached over Kelok 44's steep switchbacks, best approached as a slow overnight rather than a rushed viewpoint stop. Sungai Batang adds village life and traditional Minang houses, though the lake is not as pristine as old photographs suggest.
Payakumbuh and Harau Valley
Base · 2 days
Stay in or near Harau for limestone walls, rice fields, waterfalls and a proper evening in the valley. It is close enough to Bukittinggi to reach easily, but deserves an overnight rather than a long day trip.
Batusangkar, Pagaruyung and Tanah Datar
Base · 2 days
This is the strongest place to make Minangkabau culture tangible: rumah gadang, weaving villages, rice country and the Pagaruyung complex. Go with a guide or driver if possible; the cultural context matters more than ticking off photo stops.
Mandeh, Tarusan and Painan
Base · 2 days
West Sumatra's most workable mainland coast break, with Painan as the sensible base and Mandeh for an early island-boat day. Expect a pleasant local boating and snorkeling trip, not Raja Ampat-level reefs or resort polish.
Solok and Lake Singkarak
Quieter southern-highland scenery of open lake views and rice fields, best used for a countryside overnight or a scenic link between Tanah Datar and Sawahlunto. It is a landscape stop, not a resort-lake destination.
Sawahlunto
Short stop · 1 day
A compact former coal company town that gives the trip a welcome industrial-history counterpoint to Minangkabau villages. One night is enough to see the Ombilin mining heritage without pretending the town is packed with sights.
Pariaman
An easy, local-facing coastal outing north of Padang, especially worthwhile during the Tabuik observance. Outside the festival, treat it as a relaxed train day trip rather than a must-stay destination.
Mentawai Islands
Base · 7 days
Siberut, Sipora and the surf islands are a separate expedition, not an add-on to a mainland week. Commit at least five to seven days for a surf camp, boat trip or carefully arranged rainforest-and-culture visit, with Padang buffer nights on both sides.
First-timer’s mainland West Sumatra
8 daysPadang (1 day) → Bukittinggi and the Agam Highlands (4 days) → Payakumbuh and Harau Valley (2 days) → Padang (1 day)
The right first trip: Padang for food and flights, Bukittinggi as the main highland base, then an actual overnight in Harau rather than a rushed out-and-back. Use Bukittinggi for Lake Maninjau and Tanah Datar day trips; do not dilute this route with the coast or Sawahlunto.

For travelers who want the province’s full mainland range: food and highland scenery, Minangkabau cultural country, one worthwhile industrial-heritage overnight, then a proper coastal boat day. Hire a driver for the Bukittinggi–Tanah Datar–Sawahlunto–Painan stretch; public transport makes this needlessly slow.

4 daysPadang (1 day) → Bukittinggi and the Agam Highlands (2 days) → Padang (1 day)
A tight, workable introduction for a short break. Eat seriously in Padang, then give Bukittinggi two nights and choose one focused excursion: Lake Maninjau for scenery or Batusangkar, Pagaruyung and Tanah Datar for culture. Harau is a poor fit unless you skip Bukittinggi altogether.

For surfers, divers or travelers with a properly arranged Siberut trip—not anyone looking for a casual beach add-on. The Padang nights are deliberate ferry buffers. Finish in Bukittinggi for cooler highlands, food and one good day trip before positioning back in Padang for departure.
