Negril
Base · 3–7 nights
Jamaica’s best beach-first base: Seven Mile Beach for easy swimming and the West End for cliffs, sunsets, snorkeling and low-key nightlife. Pick it for a stay-put holiday, not as a launchpad for the whole island.
Ocho Rios, Oracabessa and St Ann
Base · 4 nights
The activity-heavy north coast, built around Dunn’s River Falls, Blue Hole, Green Grotto Caves and beach days. Ocho Rios can feel cruise-oriented; Oracabessa and quieter St Ann bases are the better choice if you want the sights without staying in the thick of it.
Kingston and Port Royal
Base · 1–3 nights
The cultural core: reggae and dancehall history, the Bob Marley Museum, Trench Town, Devon House, excellent contemporary Jamaican food and historic Port Royal. This is for people who want a real city rather than a resort substitute.
Portland and Port Antonio
Base · 4 nights
The wet, green east coast for rainforest, rivers, coves and Boston Bay jerk—not polished resort life. Base around Port Antonio for Frenchman’s Cove, Blue Lagoon, Reach Falls, Rio Grande rafting and Winnifred Beach.
Blue Mountains
Base · 2 nights
Cool, steep coffee country above Kingston, with estate visits, misty views and Blue Mountain Peak hikes. It is Jamaica’s best antidote to the coast and makes most sense paired with Kingston or Portland.
Montego Bay, Rose Hall and Falmouth
Base · 2 nights
The practical north-coast gateway: big resort choice, short airport transfers, Doctor’s Cave Beach, golf, Rose Hall and Falmouth’s luminous lagoon. Convenient rather than subtle, and particularly suited to short or logistics-light trips.
South Coast: Treasure Beach, Black River and St Elizabeth
Base · 3 nights
A dry, slower counterweight to the resort coast: fishing villages, independent hotels, farm country, Black River wildlife trips, YS Falls and Pelican Bar. Come for seafood and atmosphere rather than flawless swimming beaches.
Cockpit Country and inland Trelawny
Limestone hills, caves, birdlife and Maroon history behind the north coast. It is the worthwhile interior detour for travelers who have already had their fill of beach resorts, best handled as a guided extension.
Mandeville and the central highlands
A cooler, residential inland base with markets and everyday Jamaican life, useful as a bridge between the south coast and the interior. It has less headline sightseeing than the coast, which is exactly the appeal for longer stays.
Negril stay-put beach week
7 nightsNegril (7 nights)
For a first Jamaica trip where swimming, sunsets and minimal logistics matter more than collecting sights. Fly in and out of Montego Bay, take the 1½–2 hour transfer once, then stay put; adding Kingston or the east coast would turn a beach break into a driving holiday.

9 nightsMontego Bay, Rose Hall and Falmouth (2 nights) → Ocho Rios, Oracabessa and St Ann (4 nights) → Negril (3 nights)
The sensible first-time circuit for travelers who want resort ease, Dunn’s River and Blue Hole, then a proper beach finish. Arrive and depart via Montego Bay; the Ocho Rios-to-Negril move is a transfer day, not a casual hop, so do not bolt on Kingston.
Plan this routeKingston, coffee country and the wild east
10 nightsKingston and Port Royal (3 nights) → Blue Mountains (2 nights) → Portland and Port Antonio (4 nights) → Kingston and Port Royal (1 night)
For music, food, hiking and rainforest over all-inclusives. Fly KIN round-trip: begin with Kingston’s cultural weight, slow down in the mountains, then give Portland enough time for coves, rivers and Boston jerk. The final Kingston night is deliberate insurance against long, winding east-coast transfers before a flight.

14 nightsNegril (4 nights) → South Coast: Treasure Beach, Black River and St Elizabeth (3 nights) → Kingston and Port Royal (3 nights) → Portland and Port Antonio (4 nights)
A deeper trip for repeat visitors who want beach, fishing-village south coast, city culture and rainforest in one coherent west-to-east line. Fly into Montego Bay and out of Kingston; use private transfers or be genuinely comfortable driving on the left. This is already four bases—do not add Ocho Rios unless you remove one.
