Queenstown and the Whakatipu Basin
Base · 2–3 days
Otago’s most convenient alpine base for lake time, ski access, big-ticket adventure and the region’s deepest choice of hotels and restaurants. It is worth the crowds if you want to do things, rather than merely look at scenery.
Wānaka, Lake Hāwea and the Matukituki Valley
Base · 2 days
The stronger Southern Lakes base for hiking, biking and unhurried lake days, with a noticeably less resort-driven evening scene than Queenstown. Use it for Mount Aspiring-side walks and, in winter, Treble Cone or Cardrona.
Arrowtown and Gibbston Valley
A compact Queenstown-side combination of gold-rush streets, Arrow River walks and accessible Central Otago pinot noir. It is an easy day from Queenstown, but April weekends can feel overwhelmed by visitors.
Cromwell, Bannockburn and Lake Dunstan
Base · 2 days
The most useful Central Otago base, positioned for vineyards, fruit stalls, Lake Dunstan Trail and onward drives in every direction. Stay around Bannockburn or the lake rather than treating functional Cromwell town centre as the destination.
Clyde, Alexandra and the Teviot Valley
Base · 2 days
Gold-rush stone buildings, Clutha Mata-au scenery, orchards and the best practical hubs for the Otago Central Rail Trail. This is slow country: come with a bike, a car, or a plan for shuttles.
Maniototo, Naseby, Ranfurly and Middlemarch
Short stop · 1 day
High, dry tussock country for rail-trail riding, big skies, hard frosts and an emphatically non-resort version of Otago. Naseby’s curling and dark skies give it personality; Middlemarch is the useful eastern trail terminus.
Dunedin / Ōtepoti
Base · 2–3 days
Otago’s proper city, with weathered Victorian architecture, excellent museums, breweries, cafés and beaches at the edge of town. It supplies the culture and urban texture that the Southern Lakes conspicuously lack.
Otago Peninsula
A full-day wildlife outing from Dunedin, ending at Taiaroa Head’s Northern Royal Albatross colony and passing beaches, headlands and managed penguin-viewing sites. Do not rush it: the peninsula road is slow and wildlife sightings are never guaranteed.
Ōamaru, Moeraki and the Waitaki Coast
Base · 2 days
Victorian limestone streets, genuinely oddball steampunk culture, penguins and the Moeraki Boulders make this Otago’s best north-coast overnight. Add the Waitaki Valley if you want wineries, food producers and limestone backroads.
The Otago Catlins: Owaka and Papatowai
Base · 2 days
A wet, quiet counterpoint to Queenstown: forest walks, Southern Ocean beaches, waterfalls and sparse settlements where weather sets the pace. Focus on the Otago side around Owaka and Papatowai rather than trying to race the entire Catlins coast.
Southern Lakes and Central Otago first visit
7 daysQueenstown and the Whakatipu Basin (3 days) → Wānaka, Lake Hāwea and the Matukituki Valley (2 days) → Cromwell, Bannockburn and Lake Dunstan (2 days)
The smart Queenstown return trip for a first visit: use Queenstown for activities and an Arrowtown/Gibbston day, give Wānaka its own two nights, then finish among Bannockburn vineyards and Lake Dunstan. Do not turn Wānaka into a Queenstown day trip.

9 daysQueenstown and the Whakatipu Basin (3 days) → Wānaka, Lake Hāwea and the Matukituki Valley (2 days) → Cromwell, Bannockburn and Lake Dunstan (2 days) → Dunedin / Ōtepoti (2 days)
Best done open-jaw between Queenstown and Dunedin. It earns its driving time by pairing Southern Lakes scenery and wine country with Otago’s proper city; reserve one Dunedin day for the Otago Peninsula rather than treating it as a quick add-on.

For travelers who want more than the headline lakes. This gives Central Otago enough room for wineries, a proper rail-trail section and slow backroads before shifting to Dunedin’s museums and wildlife, then north to Ōamaru’s Victorian coast.

7 daysDunedin / Ōtepoti (3 days) → Ōamaru, Moeraki and the Waitaki Coast (2 days) → The Otago Catlins: Owaka and Papatowai (2 days)
The anti-Queenstown route: city texture, managed wildlife viewing, penguins, limestone coast and the weather-led quiet of the Catlins. Use a car and keep the Catlins flexible; its appeal is stopping for walks and beaches, not racing a fixed circuit.
