Taipei
Base · 1–4 nights
The essential first base: temples, museums, old commercial streets, night markets, serious restaurants, hiking and hot springs all work without wasting time on transport. Give it three full days rather than treating it as an airport stop.
Jiufen, Shifen and the Northeast Coast
Short stop · 1 day
Former mining hills, steep tea-house lanes, waterfall-and-railway villages and Pacific headlands make the best scenic extension from Taipei. Go early or stay late; the standard midday Jiufen–Shifen rush is the least appealing version.
Yilan and Jiaoxi
Base · 2 nights
A wet, green northeast reset of hot springs, rice fields, local food and coastal weather. Jiaoxi is the easy overnight; choose it for slowing down, not for a checklist of major sights.
Sun Moon Lake and the Central Mountains
Short stop · 1 night
Taiwan's straightforward scenic mountain overnight: cycle the lake, take the boat, walk the shore and accept that it is polished rather than wild. One night is usually right; reach it via Taichung, with the HSR station well outside the city center.
Chiayi and Alishan
Short stop · 1 night
Come for cypress forests, high-mountain tea, mist and the forest railway rather than luxury accommodation. It is a real mountain transfer from the west coast, so stay at least one night and do not squeeze it between Taipei and Tainan in a day.
Tainan
Base · 2 nights
Taiwan's strongest food city and its best place to understand temples as living neighborhood institutions. Stay centrally for small breakfast shops, milkfish, shrimp dishes, noodles and old-city wandering; two nights is the minimum.
Kaohsiung
Base · 2 nights
A relaxed port city with harbor walks, Pier-2 art spaces, Cijin Island, seafood and an MRT that makes it easier than Tainan to cover ground. Pair it with Tainan, Meinong or Kenting rather than expecting Taipei-level sight density.
Kenting and the Far South
The tropical contrast: surf, diving, coral coast and winter sun at the island's southern tip. It is not a quick rail add-on—budget roughly two more hours by road from Zuoying after the HSR—so skip it on short trips unless beach time matters.
Hualien, Taroko and the East Coast
Base · 2 nights
Taiwan's spacious Pacific-facing side, with coastal scenery, Indigenous food and access to the Rift Valley. Taroko should not be sold as the old gorge-hiking itinerary: major trails and bus access remain heavily restricted after the 2024 earthquake, so check conditions and use taxi, car or charter for accessible areas.
Taitung and the East Rift Valley
Base · 3 nights
Rice country, Pacific light, cycling and Indigenous food give this southeast corridor a slower, more open feel than the west. Spend two or three nights around Taitung, Chishang or Luye; beyond the rail line, a car, scooter competence or driver makes a major difference.
Penghu, Kinmen and Matsu
These are separate island trips, not easy extras: choose Penghu for beaches, basalt and seafood; Kinmen for Fujian villages and military history; Matsu for rugged, weather-dependent isolation. Domestic flights are the practical link and can fill early on weekends and holidays.
Taipei properly
5 daysTaipei (4 days) → Jiufen, Shifen and the Northeast Coast (1 day)
The right first trip when time is short. Give Taipei enough room for temples, museums, food neighborhoods, a hike or hot springs, then use the northeast as a day trip rather than hauling luggage to another hotel. Do not bolt on Tainan or Alishan; that turns five days into transfer work.
Plan this routeClassic west-coast first trip
9 nightsTaipei (3 nights) → Sun Moon Lake and the Central Mountains (1 night) → Chiayi and Alishan (1 night) → Tainan (2 nights) → Kaohsiung (2 nights)
This is the efficient first-time circuit: Taipei's urban density, one accessible mountain-and-lake pause, Alishan's forests and tea, then Tainan's food before finishing in Kaohsiung. The HSR makes the west corridor fast, but Taichung-to–Sun Moon Lake and Chiayi-to-Alishan are genuine road transfers; Alishan is the deliberately slow day. Fly from Kaohsiung if fares work, or take the HSR back north.

15 nightsTaipei (3 nights) → Yilan and Jiaoxi (2 nights) → Hualien, Taroko and the East Coast (2 nights) → Taitung and the East Rift Valley (3 nights) → Kaohsiung (2 nights) → Tainan (2 nights) → Taipei (1 night)
For travelers who want Taiwan's sharpest contrast: damp northern hot springs, the spacious Pacific side and Rift Valley, then the rail-efficient southern cities and Tainan's food. Use conventional express trains on the east coast and reserve early; there is no HSR there, and disruptions are more plausible. Treat Hualien as coast and limited-access Taroko territory, not a promise of the pre-2024 gorge-trail itinerary. Once you reach Kaohsiung, the HSR restores the fast west-coast rhythm.
