First visit? Stay in Downtown Colorado Springs.
Downtown is the least complicated first-visit base: the most walkable concentration of hotels, restaurants, museums and evening options, plus THE ZEB and the best local bus connections. You will still want a car or tours for the big outdoor sights, but it gives a visitor something to do after returning from them.

Avoid sleeping near Southeast Colorado Springs, Airport and Fort Carson corridor, Isolated I-25 hotel frontage outside Downtown or the north side, Powers and East Colorado Springs, if you are visiting without a car. Use it only when the airport, Fort Carson or a low rate is the priority. It is car-dependent, remote from the visitor sights, and the evidence specifically flags southeast Colorado Springs as generally less safe than the west or north.
