1Philadelphia
Base · 3 days
Pennsylvania’s essential first stop for the Independence Hall–Old City core, major art museums, Reading Terminal Market and genuinely strong neighborhood food. It works best on foot and by transit; do not waste the visit driving between historic-district parking garages.

Short stop · 1 day
The worthwhile Philadelphia side trip for Longwood Gardens, the Wyeth country around Chadds Ford, Kennett Square and rural mushroom-country meals. Use a car and make Longwood the fixed point of the day rather than trying to cover every estate and garden.

Base in Lancaster for Central Market, bakeries and farm roads through Bird-in-Hand, Intercourse, Lititz and Strasburg. The appeal is working countryside and food traditions, not staged Amish encounters.

Gettysburg and Adams County
4Gettysburg and Adams County
Short stop · 1 day
Give the battlefield and museum a full day rather than treating Gettysburg as a monument drive-through. One overnight is usually right for most visitors; add time only if Civil War history is the main reason for the trip.

Pittsburgh
5Pittsburgh
Base · 2 days
A proper urban destination, not just the stop before Fallingwater: use three nights for the Strip District, Lawrenceville, Oakland museums, the Warhol and Mount Washington views. Its compact-looking map hides steep hills and awkward cross-river movement, so organize days by neighborhood.

Laurel Highlands, Ohiopyle and Fallingwater
6Laurel Highlands, Ohiopyle and Fallingwater
Short stop · 1 day
This is the car-based extension from Pittsburgh for Fallingwater, Kentuck Knob, Ohiopyle’s river landscape and serious outdoor time. Stay nearby if Fallingwater matters; a rushed Pittsburgh day trip wastes too much time on slow mountain roads.

The Poconos
7The Poconos
Base · 3 days
Choose this sprawling mountain-and-lake region for a specific cabin, resort, ski, waterfall or rafting plan, not for a general sightseeing loop. Jim Thorpe and Lehigh Gorge make the strongest base area for active travelers who want more than resort time.

Base · 2 days
A good eastern Pennsylvania weekend combines Bethlehem’s Moravian quarter and SteelStacks, Easton’s market-town feel, and Jim Thorpe for Lehigh Gorge cycling or rail excursions. Jim Thorpe is best used as an outdoor base, not just a crowded foliage-season shopping stop.

Hershey, Harrisburg and the Susquehanna Valley
9Hershey, Harrisburg and the Susquehanna Valley
This is the practical central corridor for Hersheypark, Chocolate World, the State Capitol and the National Civil War Museum. Pick it for family logistics or as a road-trip stop; it is less rewarding than Lancaster or Gettysburg for atmosphere.

State College, Happy Valley and central Pennsylvania
10State College, Happy Valley and central Pennsylvania
State College is a useful, lively base for Penn State, football weekends, Bellefonte and nearby ridge-and-valley hiking. It earns a stop for college-sports travelers or on an east–west drive, rather than as a core first-trip priority.

11Erie and Presque Isle
Pennsylvania’s Lake Erie corner is worth the detour for Presque Isle beaches, cycling, birding, sunsets and nearby wine country. Treat it as a summer destination or a Pittsburgh/Cleveland extension, not an add-on to a Philadelphia-focused itinerary.

Philadelphia and Brandywine, done properly
4 daysPhiladelphia (3 days) → Brandywine Valley and Chester County (1 day)
The strongest short Pennsylvania trip. Stay in Philadelphia throughout, then rent a car for one focused Longwood Gardens–Kennett Square or Chadds Ford day; do not dilute it with an overnight in the countryside.

8 daysPhiladelphia (3 days) → Lancaster County and Pennsylvania Dutch Country (2 days) → Gettysburg and Adams County (1 day) → Pittsburgh (2 days)
The best first road trip for travelers who want the state’s essential contrast: Philadelphia history and food, Lancaster farm country, a serious battlefield visit, then Pittsburgh’s museums and neighborhoods. Take the car from Lancaster onward and do not try to squeeze Fallingwater into the Gettysburg-to-Pittsburgh transfer day.

10 daysPhiladelphia (3 days) → Brandywine Valley and Chester County (1 day) → Lancaster County and Pennsylvania Dutch Country (2 days) → Gettysburg and Adams County (1 day) → Laurel Highlands, Ohiopyle and Fallingwater (1 day) → Pittsburgh (2 days)
For travelers who care more about Longwood, food, Civil War history and Frank Lloyd Wright than resort-country scenery. Sleep near Fallingwater or Ohiopyle rather than forcing it into a rushed Pittsburgh out-and-back; reserve Fallingwater before locking in hotels.

5 daysLehigh Valley, Bethlehem, Easton and Jim Thorpe (2 days) → The Poconos (3 days)
A car-based eastern Pennsylvania escape for cycling, hiking, waterfalls, rafting or a cabin stay. Use the Lehigh Valley stop for Bethlehem or Easton plus Jim Thorpe and the gorge, then choose one Poconos base instead of wasting time crisscrossing a region that is much larger than it looks.
