When to go

A good route

Start
Zion Ponderosa Ranch Resort main gate / East Zion Adventures shuttle check-in
Book the Observation Point Shuttle in advance; confirm weather and shuttle operation the day before.
Observation Point Shuttle to the East Mesa or Stave Spring drop-off
Parking at Zion Ponderosa is free for booked shuttle users; return pickups run at :15 and :45 past the hour.
Walk from shuttle drop-off to the East Mesa trailhead15 min
The shuttle drop-off is about 0.5 mile from the trailhead.
East Mesa Trail to Observation Point and back180 min
Hike the gentle 6.8-mile round trip; do not expect the closed East Rim route to connect down into Zion Canyon.
Observation Point viewpoint20 min
Carry an NPS entrance pass: this hike enters Zion National Park even though the shuttle begins outside it.
Return to the signed shuttle pickup point
Be back in time for the arranged final pickup; do not rely on self-driving rough access roads in an unsuitable vehicle.

Food & breaks

Bring all water and trail food; do not rely on trailhead services.
Use a restroom before hiking; services at East Mesa are not assured.
Pack out all trash and any required human-waste supplies.

Skip it if

Skip it for classic Zion Canyon sights or a Springdale day; the east-side base is roughly 1–1½ hours by car from Springdale’s south entrance. Skip rugged Jeep/UTV tours if you dislike bumps, dust, noise, or commercial adventure-resort outings.
