Central Da Nang
Base · 1–2 days
Use it for the Cham Sculpture Museum, serious local food and painless airport logistics. The riverfront is pleasant but not the reason to linger; this is the region’s most efficient short-stay base.
My Khe & Sơn Trà Peninsula
Base · 1–2 days
Pair broad My Khe beach with Sơn Trà’s forest roads, Linh Ứng Pagoda and a real chance of seeing red-shanked doucs. Stay here for beach-hotel convenience, not neighborhood charm.
Hoi An Old Town
Base · 1.5–2.5 days
The essential cultural stop: preserved trading-port lanes, old houses and temples that are best experienced at dawn and after dinner. Sleep nearby rather than reducing it to a crowded day trip from Da Nang.
An Bàng, Cẩm An & Trà Quế
Base · 1–2 days
Hoi An’s best slow-travel base combines a usable beach, rice-field cycling and Trà Quế’s herb gardens. It is calmer than the Old Town while remaining close enough for evenings there.
Marble Mountains & Non Nước
Short stop · 0.5 days
A compact, stair-heavy cluster of caves, shrines and limestone viewpoints between Da Nang and Hoi An. Go early and treat it as a two- or three-hour stop while changing bases, not a full-day destination.
Mỹ Sơn Sanctuary
Short stop · 0.5 days
The region’s most substantial historic site: weathered Cham Hindu towers in a forested valley. It is worthwhile with context and an early start; without either, the heat and visible war damage can make it feel underwhelming.
Bà Nà Hills
Short stop · 1 day
Go for the cable car and Golden Bridge, not the faux-European resort complex at the top. It is an expensive, queue-prone spectacle, but a defensible choice for first-timers and families who know exactly what they are signing up for.
Cù Lao Chàm
Base · 1–2 days
The only convincing island escape near Hoi An, with simple fishing-village stays, seafood and variable snorkeling. Make it a flexible March-to-August plan rather than a non-refundable centerpiece.
Tam Kỳ & Tam Thanh
Base · 1.5–2 days
A quieter southern base for Tam Kỳ chicken rice, Tam Thanh’s mural village and low-key fishing coast. Choose it to get off the Da Nang–Hoi An conveyor belt, not for a dense checklist of sights.
Núi Thành & Tam Hải
Short stop · 1 day
This is the deliberate detour: sparse beaches, fishing communities and very little tourism infrastructure toward Chu Lai. It rewards independent travelers with a car or patient driver, not travelers looking for easy resort logistics.
Efficient first taste
4 nights / 5 daysCentral Da Nang (1 day) → My Khe & Sơn Trà Peninsula (1 day) → Marble Mountains & Non Nước (half day) → Hoi An Old Town (1.5 days) → An Bàng, Cẩm An & Trà Quế (1 day)
For a short first visit that does not pretend to be a beach holiday. Use Da Nang for the museum, food and Sơn Trà, stop at Marble Mountains while transferring south, then give Hoi An an actual evening and morning rather than a rushed day trip.

7 nights / 8 daysCentral Da Nang (1.5 days) → My Khe & Sơn Trà Peninsula (1.5 days) → Bà Nà Hills (1 day) → Marble Mountains & Non Nước (half day) → Hoi An Old Town (2 days) → Mỹ Sơn Sanctuary (half day) → An Bàng, Cẩm An & Trà Quế (1 day)
The best all-round first itinerary: Da Nang gets enough time for city food, beach and Sơn Trà; Hoi An gets several evenings; Mỹ Sơn is a focused early excursion. Bà Nà is optional in spirit but fits here if the Golden Bridge matters more to you than another beach day.

For travelers who want the standard Da Nang–Hoi An circuit but refuse to spend the whole trip inside it. Keep Cù Lao Chàm flexible, then slow down in Tam Kỳ and Tam Thanh for chicken rice, fishing coast and a less manicured version of central Vietnam.

A deliberately unhurried route for confident independent travelers with private transfers, a car or strong scooter skills. It gives Hoi An and An Bàng room to breathe, makes the island an overnight rather than a crowded boat excursion, and finishes in the quiet southern coast where convenience is thin but the main circuit finally falls away.
